Grease and line a 23cm/9in deep, round tin with a double layer of greaseproof paper. Preheat the oven to 140C/120C Fan/ Gas mark 1.
Measure the butter, sugar, eggs, treacle and almonds into a very large bowl and mix together well using an electric mixer. Add the flour and spice and mix until well blended. Next stir in the fruit from step one. Spoon into the prepared tin, level off and then get a metal spoon and make a dip in the centre.
Bake for about 4 - 4.5 hours in the centre of the preheated oven. Check the colour of the cake after about 2 hours and if it is a nice evenly coloured golden brown cover with tin foil to prevent further colouring. Check the cake is cooked by inserting a skewer in the centre of the cake, if it comes out clean your cake is ready.
